Thumbnail sizes
Every YouTube video has its thumbnail in several sizes. HD (1280 × 720) is the full custom thumbnail as the creator uploaded it, and only exists for HD videos. SD (640 × 480) and High (480 × 360) are available for almost every video and add black bars above and below widescreen images. Medium (320 × 180) is the small widescreen version used in lists.
Designers and editors use thumbnails as references for their own covers, researchers collect them to study what gets clicks, and creators save their own when they’ve lost the original file.
YouTube Thumbnail Downloader: frequently asked questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
The largest is 1280 × 720 (HD). YouTube also keeps 640 × 480, 480 × 360 and 320 × 180 versions of every thumbnail.
Why is there no HD thumbnail for some videos?
YouTube only makes the 1280 × 720 version when the video or its custom thumbnail is HD. FetchBolt shows every size that exists and hides the rest.
Does it work with Shorts?
Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/ link. Shorts thumbnails are the frame YouTube picked, in the same sizes.
Can I use the thumbnail in my own video or post?
Thumbnails belong to the video’s creator. Use them for reference, or with the creator’s permission, and credit them.
Is it free?
Yes. The thumbnail downloader is free and has no limits.
